Frosted Window Panes

I decided, after much thought, to frost my bathroom window. Thought, because I wanted a frosted duo pane window, but did not want the expense and miserylabor of changing out the window with a new one. Since the bathroom has a door, And the thermostat is in the bedroom, I don’t get a lot of draft coming from there.
So I grabbed a can of spray glass frosting, and bordered the glass some two inch painters tape and divided the glass using 1” painter’s tape , turned the exhaust fan on in the bathroom and Sprayed away.

It took 4 light coats for an even finish, but well worth it… My bathroom window faces the neighbors kitchen window, so I won’t be flashing them anymore while they are eating their Cheerios, and I have a bit more privacy. The frosted window allows the light to come through and keeps my private parts well hid.
Before fall I plan on making a storm window for the outside of the window.

In retrospect, now I wished I had just frosted the whole window solid, but it is easy to correct. A razor scraper will remove the frosting and allow me to do that.

Remodeling made easy

My mom wanted the apartment management to do a quick remodel. And surprised they agreed. They also wanted her to sign a lease guaranteeing she would stay for awhile (good tenants are hard to find) Anyway a little negotiation and every one is happy. They did a good job on remodeling the kitchen, instead of wasting a lot they put new door and drawer fronts on the existing cabinets, same with the bathroom, new conter tops and new vinyl linoleun that looks like ceramic. I negotiated drawer pulls for her, I reminded the manager that mom is a little older and it makes more sense for her to have them, and that I would pay for and install them myself. They went for it! here is a pic of the pulls I installed in the kitchen

They are carriage house style pulls, easy to install and easier on the budget! The whole kitchen (19 pulls) cost under $30. I went with standard pulls for the bathroom

The Hallway bathroom I put chrome to match fixtures and the pulls on the laundry doors.

The nice thing about adding the pulls is they give a finished look to all the cabinets, as well as are more ergonomic for mom, who doesn't break her french wrapped nails opening them. Great look, easy on the enviorment. You can't lose! I also put together her new dining table, and disassembled her old one figuring I would have to get rid of it for her- and Surprise!- She went next door and the gal who lives next door came in and took the old table. Turned out her dining table was broken and this was the perfect replacement. I chuckled and told mom she just "free-cycled." Hopefully Eva her neighbor can find something to do with her old table as well. Everybody wins in tis situation- the apartment management gets to keep mom as a tenant longer, and they got a remodleled kitchen and bathrooms for their property, mom gets a remodel and a new dining table, her neighbor gets a new dining table. Every one wins!

CONTRACTOR HELL- the sequel

Just when you thought it was safe to wake up- you hear it-

After the last go around of contractors when I had the addition put on you would think I would have learned- contractor evil. So then I hired a contractor to replace the garage roof. Noisy but industrious, they had the old roof torn off in record time. They even brought a dumpster!
- already they are more endearing than the contractor who built the addition. The difference- I hired these guys or rather their company- not the contractor hiring subs. So if it goes bad I only have myself to blame. And I am not having the high blood pressure, hospital inducing heart problems I had with the old contractor- These guys are professional, came to get the job done!- I am so impressed with their choice of tools!They should be gone today! And I get a new garage roof to match the house! with a 30 year warranty! I would have gone with a tin roof- but limited budget forced me to go with three tab shingle. Oh well- cant have everything!

And you may ask Why oh why DIY KING, did you not do it yourself? Simple. Part of smart DIY is knowing your limitations and hiring help when you need it. It is a lot healthier for me to sit back and watch these hard working guys do what they do best than for me to climb up and sweat.

UPDATE: The roofers were done and gone by 12:30PM. COmpletely, everything cleaned up. What a great bunch of guys~!

My animals walk all over me

My dog and cat both walk all over me! Spoiled they are. I had to repair two window screens so Sammy cat could lay with the windows open- not like he can't already but these are his favorate places to lay out. It was lucky my grandma showed me how to fix screens when I was a young boy- what a savings over buying replacement screens. Very easy- just buy some screening, some "splinting" and a splinting tool- "Splinting" is the rubber cord that holds the screen into the frame. Relativy cheap- you may be able to re-use the old splinting

As for Romeo, he has a strange addiction to frosty paws- he loves em. Luckily Raise a green dog blog has a recipe for homeade frosty paws. Just some yogurt, some blue berries, a banana and peanut butter is all it takes to whip up a dog's favorite treat.
