It's what's known as a Butter Bell- you cram the butter in the lid, put a small amount of water in the "bell" then you put the lid over it- keeps butter fresh at room temperature for days- no need to refrigerate it. Don't laugh- I was raised around this very butter bell. A gift from mom's closet. She was going to goodwill it! Nooooooo! I said I would take it!

I've been thinking about buying one.
I'm impressed with how well Burien and the surrounding areas are at becoming locavore. Your previous post about talking to the owner of Eat Local makes me envious. Natural, organic things are not doing as well here so I make occasional trips to a Whole Foods which is some distance away. The Farmers' Markets are just about done for the year - I'll be looking forward to seeing them next spring!
