New life for an Old POANG Chair

Poang... That iconic chair from IKEA, what do I do when I see one on the side of the road that obviously has seen better days?

The POANG frame... getting a new life as Patio Furniture!
I throw it in the truck!!! I was looking at the frame and thought... I bet that could make a cool piece of patio furniture. So some light sanding, and cutting, and some cedar fence boards, and voila a Poang Patio chair!!! Now to decide if I paint it or stain it...

Ma's Spice Rack

Well my mother's birthday has rolled around again. 81 and she doesn't have a proper spice rack (and really needs one) So her enterprising young son did some Ikea Hacking with an Ikea Ribba Frame, some peg board and some peg board shelves from Lowes. First I cut the peg board to size, gave it a couple of applications of yellow spray paint and mounted it in the frame with glass removed. Then I hung the the wire shelves on it. And it was done - so simple, so easy and might I say good looking too. Just like Mrs. Johnson's son!!

Scarf and hat Rack

I have a lot of scarves and winter hats. A lot. I hate a cold head. But I had no way of keeping them in my Coat Wardrobe (My living room doesn't have a closet) So I came up with this storage system- I took an old Ikea pot Lid Rack that I had been using as a magazine rack, put a hanger on it and hung it in the wardrobe. It holds all my scarves, and my winter hats. sorry about the crappy cell phone pics!

Bygel Kitchen Rail Herb Garden

I made a "window box again, this time using an Ikea "Bygel Rail" and some Bygel Containers. And I planted some herbs and put it out under one of the kitchen windows... Lemon Thyme, Onion Chives, Mexican Tarragon and Variegated Oregano are whats planted. The Bygel containers make perfect little pots the even have drainage holes and cost a whopping .99. This whole project set me back $5.95. I am thinking... A series of rails mounted on some Cedar boards might make a new Vertical garden. Y'all know how I love my Vertical gardens... hmmmm......

Time in Reflection

I made this clock out of an Ikea Malma Mirror. I simply drilled through the center with a 3/8" glass drill bit, and just installed a clock works kit. In case you crack the mirror, you can replace it with a 4" ceramic tile. Guess why I made a 2nd clock with a tile?

DIY Pot Rack

I have a hard time with pot racks. I like them for awhile then decide they need to be replace or moved. Well this time I made my own. A little Ikea hacking and just some common sense.
I used Ikea Attest handles, and a Fabian shelf From Ikea, the back is from a wall lamp I had made, it is painted with Rustoleum American Accents stone paint, although I cant remember the color name (and didn't see it on their website). Different and smaller than my old pot rack, but out of the way and just as effective!

Hanging a Corner Shelf in the Shower

I used to have one of those cool shelves in the corner of my shower on an extension pole. But it was getting rusty. Leaving rust on the soap. Not wanting to replace it with something that would rust out again in 5-6 years, and given the fact the tub wall is fibreglass and not wanting to put holes in it, I started searching for a replacement. I found this corner shelf at Ikea, but had no idea how to hang it. I tried hanging it with those 3M Command hooks, but the weight was too much when the shelf was loaded. Then I thought about the Bygel rail system at Ikea. I use it in my other bathroom. But they don't make a bygel to go around corners. But not deterred,
I bought one rail, bent it 45 degrees around a piece of pipe, and hung it on the wall above the fibreglass wall of my tub/shower, Add a couple of "S" hooks, problem solved!

Viva Terre Shelf Knock Off!

above: My version of the wire shelf $26.99; Below- the Viva Terre Wire Shelf $169

I love this shelf from Viva Terre. But it has a cost of $169.00!!! OMG! There is no way I can justify that kind of money. So whats a fabously stylish guy to do? Hack his own! I went to Ikea and found these Omar baskets for the omar shelving system at $10 a piece, and the Fabian shelf for $6.99 I mounted the Omar baskets onto the fabian shelf, using some 1" wood screws and fender washers. The result is a shelf that not only resembles the Wire shelf from Viva Terre, it does it for less than a quarter of the price at $26.99. Triumph! I also added the hooks below the shelf, something found around the house to finish the knock off

Martha Stewart Knock Off Pegboard Organizer

I have been waiting to say this for years... and now the day has come....

I KNOCKED OFF MARTHA STEWART!!!
I found this on Martha Stewart's website (I was there to see what's fashionable for felons). I kid the Martha--- I really love her. Anyhow, I found this Pegboard organizer article there, I knew I had a Ribba frame from Ikea that I had bought and not returned yet ( for the penguins on vespa print) so I decided what the hell- I am always looking for my scissors and such when I am in the studio creating- why not? I got a 2' X 4' sheet of pegboard at Lowe's and took the frame apart, I kept the wood piece in the frame as a template, marked the pegboard and cut. I decided not to paint the pegboard and now, Thanks to Martha Stewart, I am the most organized Male crafter on my street.

A cookbook rack

I wanted a small space to store my cookbooks. But where?
I looked around the garage and found some dvd racks I had leftover from the living room.
I took two Ikea Lerberg DVD storage racks and put them together to make a slim bookshelf for cookbooks and such. A simple solution for under $12. I just assembled two of the lerbergs per normal, and instead of mounting them to the wall, I mounted them together to make a bookshelf, thin, but big enough for my cook books.

MOM'S SIDEBOARD

Mom needed a sideboard in her new apartment- but it couldn't be too deep and need to clear a 2 foot long baseboard heater.

I made my mom a sideboard and cabinet using IVAR cabinets, a 1X12X6 foot pine board and some mackis office storage units-
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30032387
I mounted the mackis units in a group of three , reversed the drawers and put knobs on them. I also mounted a shelf below for added stability, yet high enough t clear the small baseboard heater safely. I used wooden drawer knobs from home depot for the feet

The Cabinet is two more IVAR cabinets mounted with 1X4's- provides mom more storage

MEMORY TABLE
My version of an IKEA HACK, see the original at Ikeahacker (http:www.ikeahacker.blogspot.com) Neat project for just a day, and lots cheaper than the memory tables I have seen- could someone make a light table out of this? I don't see why no just one of those thin flourescent lights or some tube lights around the frame should do it. Then make sure you put some film or etch the glass!

Paint turned out great- Starting a new IKEA Hack

The paint turned out pretty great- I love that new sand textured paint. Maaybe try using it in the kitchen with a trowel like they suggest. Definitely the way to go when texturing small patch area. I am starting a new hack- turning two billy cabinets into a buffet/dry bar. Hope it turns out great - will remember to post pics when done.
