New life for an Old POANG Chair

Poang... That iconic chair from IKEA, what do I do when I see one on the side of the road that obviously has seen better days?

The POANG frame... getting a new life as Patio Furniture!
I throw it in the truck!!! I was looking at the frame and thought... I bet that could make a cool piece of patio furniture. So some light sanding, and cutting, and some cedar fence boards, and voila a Poang Patio chair!!! Now to decide if I paint it or stain it...

Would you like to fly in my beautiful Balloon?

One of the advantages to joining Craft parties is you get so many great Ideas from the other bloggers, Like my hot air baloon ornament, which I found on The Cheese Thief. Very simple to make, I substituted a small jewelry type box for the basket. I got my plastic ornament from Ikea "As-Is", plastic is so easy to drill into. I think it makes a smart looking ornament... Cap'n Jack likes it too!

Mom goes for Color

Mom bought a Tullsta Chair with changeable slip cover years ago when she moved from her house to her apartment. Recently I went into her apartment and the chair was sitting there with no cover- naked! All my life my mom has pretty much gone with beige or tan, all of her walls painted white. God knows how i developed appreciation of color!

Mom says she wanted a new slip cover. So I showed her some fab choices from Ikea- and a few other spots I knew of

Like – Ikea Red

Or from J Caroline Home

(this unique fabric designed by my How about Orange? friend, Jessica Jones (J Caroline has a bunch of Jessica Jones fabrics for Ikea Slip covers)

Or even this home hack design seen on IkeaHackers

I was thinking Finally some color in her drab life of course she decided to go with

Beige.

Way to step out on a limb with that color choice, Mom. Oh well at least she picked a good piece of furniture that can be redesigned with new slip covers. Nice and much better than buying another chair from the big box furniture store.

Martha Stewart Knock Off Pegboard Organizer

I have been waiting to say this for years... and now the day has come....

I KNOCKED OFF MARTHA STEWART!!!
I found this on Martha Stewart's website (I was there to see what's fashionable for felons). I kid the Martha--- I really love her. Anyhow, I found this Pegboard organizer article there, I knew I had a Ribba frame from Ikea that I had bought and not returned yet ( for the penguins on vespa print) so I decided what the hell- I am always looking for my scissors and such when I am in the studio creating- why not? I got a 2' X 4' sheet of pegboard at Lowe's and took the frame apart, I kept the wood piece in the frame as a template, marked the pegboard and cut. I decided not to paint the pegboard and now, Thanks to Martha Stewart, I am the most organized Male crafter on my street.

I only party down with the best at:

An Ikea Garden

Photo: Ikeahacker

I am always looking out for great garden ideas. Here is one from IkeaHacker. It seems the Cheap Veggie Gardner isn't the only one who thinks the topsy turvy planter costs too much. "Ninjarita", in Minneapolis, Minnesota, likes to make use of Ikea in her garden. She makes inexpensive Topsy Turvey type planters, and uses Ikea wastebaskets and storage containers for planters. Take a peak of her Ikea inspired garden. There are instructions there as well. Really cool especially if you find what you need in the Ikea As Is section. There you are buying used and keeping it from the waste stream.

What's your Swede Furniture Name?

Everyone knows I have a thing for Ikea. Now there is a site, the Blogadilla, that will give you a Swedish name for your furniture. Is a big time killer at work, worth a couple of seconds.

So, whats your Swedish Furniture Name?

Saving the damn sofa

Ok, I admit to being spendy at times. Like furniture. Seems like I buy an inordinate amount of furniture. What with three dogs, two cats (well, one cat now) an occasional bunny, my furniture gets a pretty good work out. Probably why I pick Ikea so often. I have bought expensive name brand before - it didn't last any longer than the Ikea so I figure why spend so much more money?
Well, my couch broke. Those damn Ikean Swedes, who use only reclaimable wood, joined together two pieces to make a 1 X 4 (or the Swedish equivalent) and the damn thing busted. I found another frame, for $35 on Craig's list but I don't think the seller really wanted to sell it. At least she didn't want to spend as much time talking about the couch as she did the collection of light house memrobilia. Now I am not one to dis a nice light house collection but I wanted the couch. So, anyway, I started looking at the sofa and trying to figure out what to do with the frame, (reuse, reuse) and then I came up with a plan.I fixed the damn couch. I got a 1 X 6, 72 inches long and a 1X4 same length, glued the wood on the frame back together and clamped it, then proceeded to install the 1 X 6 to . the front of broken wood, and the 1 X 4 to the back of it. Worked like a charm! Cost- $9 for the lumber. This was less than buying a frame used- or a new Lillberg couch ($299). So maybe we need to ad another "R" to Re-use, Re-Duce and Re-cycle- maybe it should be Re-pair, Re-use, Re-Duce and Re-cycle. I know that is just a basic repeat of re-use, but in this case It kept a bunch of wood out of the wastestream. Now on to repairing my work jacket!

LIFE LESS PLASTIC BLOG/ IKEA LIVING ROOM MAKEOVER

Found yet another great blog- LIFE LESS PLASTIC This gal makes real sense especially her argument on paper towels. Nice to see so many like minded peeps out there! Also, looking around blog land today at Ikea hacker had a great post about a Denise, who set out to makeover her boyfriends apartment living room and did so using primarily the furniture that was there already and items from the AS-IS department at Ikea- the living room turned out fabulous- thrifty and green! gotta love that!
