Terrarium city

My terrarium- complete with Dinosaur
Yesterday, I took a class in making Terrariums at ReTreasure in Burien. It was a fun class, where we learned to make our own "Plant-Scapes" in vessels, or rather in containers. One of these days I will do an interview with Yon, the owner at ReTreasure. But back to the terrariums... Me and the ladies had great fun playing in the dirt, sand vermiculite and rocks to create our own little mini gardens.

Fill 'er Up!

You know sometimes inspiration just comes to you. A guy at work was getting rid of this gas tank for a hog, (Big Motorcycle) it was really dented on the top. So I cut a bigger hole in the top and a drain in the bottom, and a 2" hole on the side opposite the fill side hole. I may add a few more holes along the side and turn it into a strawberry planter in the fall. But I like the look, and I think it makes a great conversation piece in the garden

Gutter (Garden) Success!

Just thought I would give y'all a look at the Gutter Garden all planted and happy!

I am going to have a talk with a gal from the community garden who is a professional landscaper on adding drip irrigation to it!

Lucky Bamboo

I was at Ikea and discovered these lucky bamboo plants. I have seen these at import stores in Seattle's International district, and the Great Wall Shopping Center near work. After reading up on them and discovering they are actually a Lily (botanical name: Dracaena) and they grow in the dark, tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia and Africa, do not like direct sun making them perfect in my new studio_ which only has a north facing window. I took a square shaped vase I had around here and filled it with "craft rocks" that I had bought for another project. Then just filled the pot with water. So simple and easy.
I only party down with the best at:

My Name is Earl...

Earl Grey that is! When I got home last night there was a big package from UPS on the stoop. Fan mail from some flounder? Early Birthday present? Nope it was the Russian tea plants I ordered a month or so ago from Raintree Nursery. Camellia Sinensis which is where tea comes from. Younger leaves make green and white tea, mature leaves the Black tea. There are instructions! So get out of bed-Romeo and Sammy we got plantin' to do!
two lazy 'Mules sharing a saccharin moment

So out we went into the east 40 feet, and planted what I hope is my caffeine fix in the future! I planted them in the old corn plot, where I also will plant some chamomile plants. Romeo helped!

What was that?- Squirrel!!!
While we planted, Sammy guarded the laundry basket, with "Puss in Boots" eyes.

Greenhouse Dreams!

I can't wait! Every year I cash in my change (Yes I am one of those freaks who puts change in a jar every night) I then use it to buy myself something extravagant on my birthday. Or I use it at Christmas. This time it's my turn! I ordered a greenhouse I found on sale at IVG Stores. But Rob, what about your plans to turn the old EZ Up frame into a greenhouse. Well, that was a bust. And I got an email it has been shipped! So I will be able to start my tomatoes, Squash etc in a greenhouse this year. Hopefully the plastic behemoth is here soon. as for the old EZ up frame... i will probably use it as a storage building, Anybody got some spare tarps?
And yes... you may now address me as "Farmer Rob"

Raspberry Wishes and Rhubarb Dreams

The warmer than average tempertaures here in the northwest that are causing the Vancouver Olympics to put into action drastic plans if too much snow melts, is causing problems here as well. It fools me into thinking that spring is right around the corner, and that it is okay to plant stuff already. Well, that and Lowes has their seed potatoes out already- and raspberry, blackberry, rhubarb bulbs. I have seeds coming in the mailbox. LOL I am possesed by a growing demon. I can't wait until spring to plant stuff. So I am sitting here with this Rhubarb plant and a raspberry bush. So I planted them. Now don't freak out. I planted them in some large planters. Then I put them on the wagon I bought at the thrift store. That way I can wheel them in and out of the garage, waiting for winter to be officially over, Then I will transplant them

Yard Munching

Huckleberry Bush

I was at the Burien Farmers Market today, and No I did not have a bratwurst.I found a man there who sells native plants. I wanted to get some blueberry bushes or something interesting. So I bought 2 native huckleberry bushes for my front yard! I love planting edibles in my yard. This should match well with the wild blackberries and my Golden Plum tree.
I remember my parents lake property at Fawn Lake in Shelton and the hundreds of black and red huckleberry bushes there. We had a neighbor that would pick them and make huckleberry pie. I cant wait until they get big enough to supply me with huckleberries. I love supplying my yard with edibles- I now have
2 apple trees(One is the neighbors but I claim any branches growing over the fence!)
1 pear tree
1 Golden Plum tree
2 huckleberry bushes
more than enough blackberry bushes (hate them blackberries)
Before you all write me nasty notes on how good and tasty blackberries are, I will remind you that here in the Pacific Northwest, blackberries are a noxious weed. They grow ferociously, with their nasty thorns. I let a few grow for the berries, but I keep them under a tight watch. I can go down to work to pick black berries. The grow everywhere. Now I just got to plant my tomaters in their boxes and figure out where the pumpkin plants go?
