Crunchy Chicken’s Pioneer Week Sunday- discovered that my fridge had died. So this week I am roughing it with the cooler. Of course I am pretty sure the Ingalls family didn't have a freezer making ice in milk jugs to get them through!

Thursday and Friday -Rode my Bicycle into to town and I have to say I need to invest in a kinder gentler seat, but in spite of a case of saddle soreness went pretty good

Sunday- topped off the week with a potluck at the community garden, and showed folks how to make Self Irrigating planters, Mason Bee houses and lady bug houses, as part of B-Patch Garden Day, our tip off to World Kitchen Garden Day

An Award? For little old me???

Simply Green hath bestowed upon Rob's World this lovely blog award. And now I am suppose to tell y'all 7 fun or fascinating facts about myself.

1- I don't like snakes. They don't have legs and move pretty fast. Don't trust them. I suppose in a comic strip life I was B.C.'s Fat Broad... speak loudly and carry a big club to flatten snakes with. But, I do leave them alone. As long as they are out there eating vermin, I can exist in harmony with them.
2- I don't know why, but all of a sudden in my life I get the strangest bouts of stage fright. Never had it before, in fact I was always kind of a ham. But now when asked to speak in public I turn into a shrinking violet.
3- I get envious of those who can weld. I would love to be able to weld metal. Good thing I don't my junky yard would be covered even more than it is.
4- I have been the person for 11 dogs in my life, and 3 cats- The problem being that since usually my animals are older rescues, I don't have them very long, and it can be kind of heart breaking. But I wouldn't trade a minute of love recieved.
5- I am proud to be a Left Wing Liberal Commie Pinko Fag as Archie Bunker used to call my Type.
6- I learned to cook at 4 years old, starting with boiling water. Only 1 oven fire in 46 years! Not that I am a gourmand or anything like that- I just like good food.
7- I have a large collection of kitchen and cooking gadgets and I use all of them. I figure that most help me save energy, all make my life easier, But seriously I need a room just for them! And my collection includes hardware like drill motors and saws! LOL!

Now as for picking 7 other blogs to present this award to--- I cannot do it-1- I think that any blogger out there should be able to give this award to themselves, and 2- Simply Green pretty much gave it out to my would be choices any way ( or most of them) So I would like to see some people take this and name 7 fascinating things about themselves.

Most. Pathetic. Dog. in. World. Ever.

Well had to give the Pooch Coach a test spin- Surprisingly Romeo went right in with no back talk
sorry aren't more pics buy I haven'y learned the fine art of bike riding and taking pics behind me yet. And even though the following looks like he is being tortured, he actually seemed to like the trailer.
Hey!- This ain't how you treat royalty!
And a little Video to go with:

Turning my dog into trailer trash

So I got this here fancy shmancy propel yersself bike (that's right- no motors). But the big problem is- How does Romeo get to go with? Well first we take a

wood cart from Harbor freight, mix it up a bit - Really the wood cart was just for the 20" bike style inflatable tires. But I was able to assimilate the main frame and part of the handle. Then I took a
kennel crate, mounted it on the frame And voila- a trailer for Romeo. Had to make a tow bar and hitch, but that wasn't to hard to figure out.And Romeo, while apprehensive, does seem to know it's how he gets to go too. Now to add a few John Deere reflectors to the back and Romi will be all set!

If it is good enough for Mr. President....

Remember President Obama was visiting Seattle last Thursday? He ate a The Grand Central Bakery in Pioneer Square and later he was talking about small business driving the new economy... and that Grand Central would be opening a new store on Friday. Well Here it is!
The Grand Central Bakery In Burien! I went in and ordered the same thing as Mr. President- a turkey sandwich which was tasty- I was impressed with the fact that they didn't seem to feel the need to package it in a big old clamshell- simply wrapped in paper.

Compostable paper. Here is to a long and prosperous tenure for the Grand Central in Burien... My fair city.

Eat a CLT!

Ok. The title of this post is childish and immature and totally unacceptable. But boy the sandwich is good!
I was perusing Readymade mag and they had some great recipes for the onslaught of tomatoes everyone should be experiencing- including this Variation on a BLT --- A CLT- Cheese, Lettuce, and Tomato that is very good. I never thought of cheese as a substitute for bacon, but it works!
* ½ c fresh blackberries
* 2-3 t chopped canned chipotle pepper in adobo sauce
* ½ c mayonnaise
* 1 t whole grain mustard
* 1 lb halloumi* cheese, sliced into ¼-inch-thick pieces
* 8 slices sourdough bread, toasted
* 4 romaine lettuce leaves
* 2 large heirloom tomatoes, such as Beefsteak, Cherokee Purple, or Early Girl, sliced
* *Note: Halloumi is a cheese from Cyprus that won't turn to goo when you cook it. It's salty, tangy and pretty mellow in flavor. Find it at specialty food stores.

TOOLS
* Blender or food processor
* Large, heavy bottom skillet

In a food processor or blender, puree blackberries, chipotle pepper, mayo, and mustard until well combined.

Heat a large, heavy bottom skillet over medium high heat. Brown each side of the halloumi for about 20 seconds. Set aside.
Smear one side of each piece of bread with blackberry mayo. Assemble sandwich with cheese, lettuce, and tomato, doubling up the tomato layer if desired. (Do it!)

Variations: Sub blueberries in for blackberries and spinach for lettuce. OR Use bacon in place of the halloumi. (It's a little too salty with both.) Be sure to crisp it up nice and drain it on a paper towel first. OR Omit bread and stack together tomato, cheese, and lettuce. Thin out mayo with 1 tbsp buttermilk and drizzle over stack for a salad.

NOTE: I used Muenster as I couldn't find Halloumi. Muenster (American Muenster, not french) is also salty tangy and pretty mellow. I also used Bok Choy in place of lettuce or spinach as I didn't have either but had some Bok Choy!

CB'S SWAG REMAKE CHALLENGE!

Lovely Lisa at Condo Blues is hosting a Remake your Swag Challenge and Giveaway and link party on her site and on Stefanie at craftside blog this Sunday. Basically all the swag (Stuff we all get) and crap that people get for free- How do they turn it in to something useful and wanted?
Anyway here is my entry- Harbor Freight gave me this flashlight for waiting for them to find a cart I needed to make Romeo's trailer. To soothe my greatly building impatience and ire. B.F.D They plan on giving them away at their tent sale coming up. A 9 L.E.D. Flashlight. HOW DO I REUSE THIS???

Simple - remember I ordered a bike a week or so ago? Well I picked it up today. It needed a head light lamp.

So I took the 9 L.E.D. Flashlight, some conduit clips and turned it in to a lamp for my bike. Works as well as the $50 + lamps I have seen and it was free!!! Just a few cents for clips.

Cucumber Salad

I really love reefer pickles with onion- this salad reminds me of that. Great cool salad that uses a lot from the garden!

Cucumber Salad
4 cucumbers, thinly sliced
1 small red bell pepper finely diced

1 small white onion, thinly sliced
1 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup water
3/4 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon dried dill, or to taste
Directions
1.Toss together the cucumbers, bell pepper and onion in a large bowl. Combine the vinegar, water and sugar in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, and pour over the cucumber and onions. Stir in dill, cover, and refrigerate until cold. This can also be eaten at room temperature, but be sure to allow the cucumbers to marinate for at least 1 hour.

One Ingredient...

A friend sent me this link to The Oregonian. Seems these gals threw a dinner party using one main ingredient- zucchini! They made a cocktail, appetizer, salad, main dish and dessert, each course utilizing zucchini in some form. Hopefully you have some zucchini this summer, not too much.

Three small changes

The "one small change" challenge has been over for some time now, but I am not ready to stop yet.
In addition to the squeegee in the bathroom change I have a couple of other changes in there as well.
After posting about the squeegee and realizing I was guilty of hypocrisy with my own love of Paper Towel for cleaning my hands, I went out
and bought some cotton terry cloth hand towels to do the same job. And one more bathroom change:
I now keep an old Rubbermaid container in there to fill with hot water when shaving- the advantages to this = less water used to shave, and the gray water is used to water plants. Plus not so much whiskers mess in the sink

Weekly Challenge Update

Sharon's Independence Days Challenge Year 3, week 29
1. Plant something: nope
2. Harvest something: Had to remove a tomato plant from the Community Garden Plot that had overgrown and was blocking the wheelchair path, but thought to take off the green tomatoes first and save them to try fried green tomatoes; tomatoes, beans, dill
3. Preserve something:
4. Waste Not: Had to remove a tomato plant from the Community Garden Plot that had overgrown and was blocking the wheelchair path, but thought to take off the green tomatoes first and save them to try fried green tomatoes A gentleman phoned me to say he got my name and number from the bulletin board at the community garden- he wanted to start donating his spent grains and hop flowers from something he brews or ferments. I saw no problem with it and said to leave it there so others can inspect it. He said that if the board goes along he has enough to keep us in browns for quite awhile. Of course, thinker that I am - or think I am- I am thinking that if it gets to be too much others, including yours truly could use it at home in their compost piles.
5: Want not:
6. Preparation and Storage:
7. Build Community Food Systems: nothing, except planning my part of the demos at the B-Patch Garden Day celebration
8. Eat the food (cook something new): fried green tomatoes; beans, dill together (steamed the beans, spiced with dill)

Move It!

This recyclable cardboard dolly may be my pick of invention of the year. Apparently, the folks at the James Dyson Awards agree as it has earned a nomination.

Fried Green Tomatoes

I have been looking for a recipe for fried Green Tomatoes for awhile. Well I had to remove a tomato plant at the community garden that had broken free from it's cage and was growing over onto the path. Since it is a wheelchair accessible path, couldn't have that. The only tomatoes on it where green. So I harvested a butt load of green tomatoes. When I got home, I googled a recipe and this looked like a winner... and it was!

Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe
from Simply Recipes.com
Ingredients
3 medium, firm green tomatoes
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup milk
2 beaten eggs
2/3 cup fine dry bread crumbs or cornmeal
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Method
1 Cut unpeeled tomatoes into 1/2 inch slices. Sprinkle slices with salt and pepper. Let tomato slices stand for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, place flour, milk, eggs, and bread crumbs in separate shallow dishes.

2 Heat 2 Tbsp of olive oil in a skillet on medium heat. Dip tomato slices in milk, then flour, then eggs, then bread crumbs. In the skillet, fry half of the coated tomato slices at a time, for 4-6 minutes on each side or until brown. As you cook the rest of the tomatoes, add olive oil as needed. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Tree Saver In my Garage- Who Knew?

I was moping around one day, thinking about the amount of paper towel used in this house, not by me, but someone else who happens to live here. "Don't you know I am an "eco-blogger?" I would argue over the amount of Paper towel being used. Martin uses them to wipe the steam off the mirror.
Let me back up a bit here. I keep a roll of paper towel in the bathroom for a very good reason- the gunk I get on my hands at work needs to come of. And if I don't want to leave hand prints on my regular towels, I use the paper to wipe my hands.

Oof da... now that I said that I need to rethink my own paper towel usage.

Anyway, I was in my garage, and it hit me!-Literally- I was taking some crap off a shelf to give to Goodwill and a squeegee used for drying a car fell and hit me on the head.

"Hmmmm.... (thinks I), I could hang this next to the mirror in the bathroom then the ISO can simply wipe the mirror with the squeegee!

Guess what? It worked. Not only is Martin happily squeegeing (sp) along, but it doubles a squeegee in the shower- Less cleaning! After a shower just run the squeegee along the wall and it keeps the shower cleaner!

Now I am off to the thrift store to find some hand towels!

Bring a Lunch- Part II

Yesterday we found lunch boxes and bags. Today, a few hints on saving money on them. First- reuse that lunch box from last year, or buy one at a garage sale or thrift shop. If your kid has outgrown the theme of last years box, take it out to the garage and give it a paint job. Then let junior put stickers or decorate it. Now to fill that box

FIRST- alternatives to zip lock and plastic bags.

Yesterday I mentioned Lunch Bots- these neat little tins that can hold a sandwich, some snacks, or what have you. You can also use old jars, but you have to figure out if your little lunchster is capable of not breaking them. Planet Box sells their "Big and Little dipper, stainless steel cannisters that would hold sandwiches and snacks on their website (you can order these without paying $35 for a lunch box). THe small dipper has a plastic lid and the big dipper has a stainless steel lid.For a plastic free alternative, check out the Happy Tiffin's "LunchBowls". Lunchboxes.com also features Lunch Bots as well as a variety of plastic sandwich boxes for the lunch box. While Fake Plastic Fish is probably having convulsions over the suggestion that you buy a plastic sandwich holder, it has to be your choice. I wouldn't but I ain't raising your kid. My own personal feeling on it is as long as it isn't getting thrown away, use it.

Now how about Cooling that lunchbox?

Well first let me say that Ice Packs suck. And what the hell is "Blue Ice"?? IF it gets a hole in it then that blue shit leaks all over. A little trick of mine for filling ice chests is freezing water in a plastic water bottle or pop bottle- that way you are reusing the bottle for something good! And if it leaks it isn't toxic- it's water!

It simple- fill the bottle 2/3'rds full, cap it and stick in the freezer.

Anyway I hope your little Einsteins have a great year... and tell them I said summers almost over- MUWHAHAHA!!!
What ideas do you have on B.Y.O.L (Bring Your Own Lunch)

Bring a Lunch

Click on pic to enlarge
Well august is here... time to start thinking about School! It's also time to start thinking about lunches! You know you will save a ton of money if your kids brown bag it. But what to send those great lunches you make in?
There is always the paper bag. Or the plastic grocery bag (if you want your child to get beat up a lot). Or you can make the decision to give Junior or Princess a neat lunch box that makes a statement. Your kid's lunchbox says a lot about them. I know.

The lunch box that gets you beat up!

From experience (I was the kid who had the nerdy plaid lunch box in elementary school and yes got beat up for it) What was my mom thinking?
If I was a kid today I would want a really cool lunch box. Lunchboxes.com has a lot of really cool choices. From a Jimi Hendrix Experience lunchbox to a Roy Rogers Cowboy Lunch Box . They have metal lunchboxes like when we were kids, plastic Bento Boxes and Laptop lunch boxes, tiffin's, and all sorts of reusable lunch bags.
I like the aforementioned Jimi Hendrix, but also they have a really cool lunch bag from the Kid's Konserve series- an all cotton lunch bag with napkin and sandwich wrap,a couple of snack cups and a stainless steel water bottle. Great for an eco-conscience kid. There are also Gator Tots- a company offering up personalized reusable lunch bags, backpacks and stuff.
Speaking of Bento Boxes, there are a lot of them geared for kids. LaptopLunches.com has a good variety of them. And junior can walk around like a little business person with his or her laptop style lunch box. Kind of a bento box redesigned for kids. I am not against a plastic lunch box, as I assume it will be used over and over but if you don't want to give you precious little person a bpa lunch, (NOTE: Laptop Lunch products are BPA Free) there is an alternative to the plastic bento- Planet Box.com offers a stainless steel laptop box that even comes with different magnetic stickers so little Picasso can redesign his or her lunch box everyday! And the stickers are not just for the planet box... Happy Tiffin has some unusual shaped steel tiffins to make your child (or adult) happy.
As far as lunchboxes, you could also add some extras like Lunch Bots for holding a sandwich or snacks in. I think the one lunchbot for sandwiches at a price of $15 is the cost of 8 boxes of ziplocks-or an estimated cost savings of over $50 during a school year!
A lot of choices out there. But think about it- this is something a child carries everyday. It should say something about who he is. So take some time before deciding to go out and just buying the first lunch box you see when shopping for school. That way your son or daughter won't end up with the stupid plaid lunch box that makes bigger kids want to beat them up.
And think about getting the adults in your household lunch boxes as well. Tomorrow- how to save $$$ on your lunch box!

Honeysuckle Berries

Surprise! A new berry!!!
I was out in the garden before work and saw these berries growing on my honeysuckle vine. Well I immediately went in and looked up "Honeysuckle Berry" on google and determined they were OK to eat. Kind of like a Kinick Kinick berry but sweeter. Found out while researching them that you can open the honey suckle flower and drink the nectar for a sweet taste treat. Why does nobody mention these things... They are important!!! Note - the berries on my plant are edible- buy most aren't. So add a new one to my "Forage list". Also one of my Columnar Apple trees has apples on it!!!

Side of the road finds!

I was driving to work and saw a sign around a pile of treasure junk that said FREE on it. You know the truck automatically stopped and looky what I got- A metal headboard that I will use as a trellis for the garden, some Chevy Hubcaps, and a set of skis that I am thinking a funky outside chair project! I love free stuff!

How to freeze Peaches

I am thinking of investing in a flat of peaches. But how to preserve them? Dehydration doesn'r seem right, not for peaches. Canning could work, but seems like a lot of work. Freezing? I remember my mom freezing peaches and it didn't work out great. So I turn to one of my favorite web sites, Pick your own.org, and find out how to freeze peaches, found out my mom didn't use any syrup or fruit juice to freeze them in. Also has directions for freezing Plums, Cherries, Nectarines, Figs and other soft fruit.
